After reading Noorizam’s ebook regarding 33 Rahsia Merakam Gambar Menarik Dengan Mengetahui Asas Fotografi, I feel like telling you more about depth of field which also explain by him. One of the method used nowadays to get better focusing on subject rather than distracting background is Shallow Depth of Field. This will create pop up on the subject and giving your more clean background. There are 3 main factor to get a Shallow Depth of Field:
- Distance of camera from subject
- Focal length of the lens
- Maximum size of Aperture
Distance of camera from subject

Depth of field is frankly relative to distance. If subject located far from camera you will get greater depth of field but if you go closer to the subject, then you’ll get a shallow depth of field. Your out of focus area will be blur.
Focal length of the lens

The depth of field is portion relative to the focal length of the lens; that is, the larger the focal length number of the lens, the shallow the depth of field. For example, a 200mm lens has the ability to capture more of the picture in shallow / blur focus than a 55mm lens. The image above was taken using 200mm f2.8 lens.
Maximum size of Aperture

This is the main factor that controls your depth of fields. To get a shallow DoF, you must use wider aperture (larger f number). But be careful when changing f-stop, you might get some of the area of your subject blur. For example if you use a 50mm f1.8 when shooting portrait, try to use 1 or 2 stop smaller than f1.8 (f2.0, f2.2, f2.8, f3.2). You still get a shallow depth of field but your subject will be sharp of every corner through my experience. The image above was taken using 50mm f1.8 lens but using f2.0 aperture.
There are somehow more details explanations on getting better image using mathematical calculations. But that is beyond my current knowledge. If you interested to learn more about Hyper-focal and Depth-of-Field, you can visit Outsight Photography.
